NBA Free Agency 2010 – July 5

Fourth of  July weekend is over and let’s review what big fireworks went off in the NBA.  We have two huge contracts offered to two NBA players.  I was hoping it would be LeBron and Wade but my dreams were shattered.  What’s taking LeBron so long?  It time for him to man up and make a decision.  Lebron just remember one thing: NBA Championship, forget what your homies are telling you.

First major contract to look at is Joe Johnson resigning with the Atlanta Hawks for $120 million for 6 years.  I understand the Hawks resigning Joe Johnson but $120 million.  Let get real, he’s not worth it.  I think the Hawks could have offered less and still kept him.  Do I blame Joe Johnson, no way.  They offered him the max and he was very smart to take it.

The second big contract I want to talk about is Amare Stoudemire signing with the New York Knicks for $100 million over five years.  You have to be kidding me.  This is a huge risk by the Knicks.  Amare is good but I don’t think he is worth $100 million.  I know the Knicks are rebuilding and doing whatever it can to make a move into the playoffs but I think they overpaid for Amare.  I have no doubt signing Amare is step one  to relaunching the franchise but the Knicks need to land superstar Lebron James or it’s all for nothing. I can’t see Wade coming to the Knicks but if he does look out.  Again do I blame Amare for signing with the Knicks for $100 million, no way.

Both Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire made a wise decision.  Owners showed them the money and they took it.  Before Lebron make his world shaking decision to change the landscape of the NBA, free agents  such as Joe and Amare were wise to get their share of the pie before it was too late.

Two other players to exit free agency and return to their teams were Paul Pierce with Boston and Dirk Nowitzki with Dallas.  These two players just entered free agency to secure their futures.  I have to say smart move.  Both players signed on for another 4 years with their teams.

One last comment is the LA Lakers signing Steve Blake.  Steve Blake played point guard for both the Blazers and Clippers.  I think this is a great move for the Lakers.  I always believe their weakest position was point guard.  I like Derek Fisher but he is getting old.  Eventually this position has to be addressed and no better time than now to address it.

Kayaking in Lithuania – Day Two

After a cold night, we awoke to another beautiful day.  We enjoyed or coffee and tea along with some pasta my brother-in law cooked over the fire. We even filled some of our empty bottles with water from a natural spring close to the lake.  Wow, was that water cold.  After a morning swim, we finally torn down our campsite, put our gear in our kayaks, and off we went for day two of our adventure.

Today was a bit different.  We spent less time on the lakes and more time kayaking in the rivers.  Of course, it was easier to kayak on a river than a lake.  It seems on the lake, when I was oaring, I was using too much power with my right arm and when I was oaring with the left, I was not putting enough strength into it.  Instead of kayaking straight across the lake, we ended up zigzagging across it.

The river was a whole different story.  Less oaring was required when going down the river.  We just need to compensate more for the bends in the rivers.  The scenery was spectacular going down these rivers.  Looking into the water you see a whole different world than what was above the water.

We made it to our first stop.  It was a point where we had to take our kayaks across a road. There river did continue under the road to the other side. The other side was a little recreational area where many of the locals enjoyed the water gushing out.  There was a little market and place to grab a bit to eat.  We enjoyed some beer, saltibarsciai (fresh beet soup), and some ice cream.  We picked up a couple of snacks and continue with our journey down the river.

After a nice time floating down the river, we finally made it to another lake.  We kayaked a little further across the lake to our final stop of the day.  It would be here where we would set up camp for the night.

New Events in 2016 Olympics

Yeah, the 2016 Olympics will have both golf and rugby as events.  I think this is a good idea to add two new events to the Olympic program.  Golf is a huge sport worldwide and I think it is about time that the Olympic Committee brough back this sport as an event.  As for rugby, I have only watched bits and pieces of this game on television but   it would be entertaining as an event in the Olympics. I think the Olympics need to bring back more events to th the Olympic  games. I would like them to bring back the Tug of War event. I sure can’t wait for the 2016 Olympic games

Olympics in Rio in 2016

To be honest , I am so happy to see that Rio De Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Olympics.  This will be the first time that a city in South America will host an Olympics.  This will be an interesting setting for the Olympic games.

To everyone who wanted to see the Olympics held in Chicago, better luck next time. I really thought Chicago had a very good shot at hosting the Olympics. I think if Rio wasn’t in the mix of cities competing to host the Olympics then Chicago would have won.  I think this was an opportunity to choose a city that would make history.  Choosing Rio to host the Olympics was an easy choice.  The other two cities, Madrid and Tokyo, were interesting  choices but I was not too excited to see either of them to host the Olympics.

I think if the US wants to land the Olympics then they should have the state of Hawaii host the Olympics.  Honestly, I don’t think Hawaii has the infrastructure to handle the Olympics but it would be a great place to attempt to have it.  The only other place I would like to see the Olympics held, it would be in Lithuania.  There is no way Lithuania could hold an Olympics.

The Legend of Superbowl 42

Most Superbowl tend to be over-hyped. Superbowl 42 in Phoenix, Arizona televised on FOX will create an NFL Legend. The New England Patriots have been chasing the desirable prefect season all year.  A victory in Superbowl 42 will make the New England Patriots one of the greatest teams in NFL History and the only team to ever go 19-0.  The New York Giants have the daunting task to pull off one of the greatest upsets in sport’s history.  The New York Giants started the season 0-2 and barely made the playoffs.  In the playoffs the sent a message by beating Tampa Bay rather easily, they stunned the Dallas Cowboys at home, and they shocked us all with beating Green Bay in subzero temperature in overtime.

One huge non factor will be the weather.  The last time these teams met The Patriots squeaked by with a 38 to 35 victory at the Meadowlands.  As I recall watching it on television, it was quite windy that evening.  Again I would like to thank the NFL for broadcasting that game on regular television versus just airing it on their NFL Network as it was originally scheduled.  I honestly think when the Patriots played the San Diego Charges in the AFC Championship game, the weather contributed to Tom Brady’s poor performance.  The non weather factor is a benefit for both teams but I give the edge to the Patriots.

If the Patriots win this game, Tom Brady and Bill Bilichick guarantee themselves as legends in NFL history.  The addition to the receiver core this year has proved how great of a quarterback Tom Brady is.  Tom Brady never has a great receiver until the addition of Randy Moss this year.  Defense are forced to double Moss and that has allowed Welker to accumulate more reception than Moss.  Moss still was able to hook up with Brady for 23 record breaking TDs in one season.  Let’s not overlook the over receiver such as Welker, Gaffney, Staleworth, and Watson. Brady with 50 TDs was also able to break Manning single season TD record.  I have been very impressed with the running game with both Maroney and Faulk.  The defense is not as quite as strong as in previous year but don’t let that mislead you.   Bruschi is the heart of this defense and Seau is a man with a mission to win a Superbowl.  I don’t want to leave out anyone on the defense such as Vrabel, Harrison, Thomas, and Samuel.  Let me stop there.  This is an great team on the verge of becoming a legend this Sunday.  My guess is as good as your as who will be the hero of this team if the Patriots win.   The obvious pick should be Tom Brady but we will see on Sunday.

If the New York Giants win, it will be the biggest upset since Superbowl 36.  The Giants will complete their Mission Impossible and the Patriots perfect season will be forgotten.  I was not a believer in the Giants this season.  I was one of the many people who suggest that Eli Manning needed to be traded or get rid of coach Tom Coughlin.  Was I ever wrong or what?  What I have seen of Eli Manning and the offense in both the Dallas Cowboys’ game and the Green Bay Packers’ game is he is ready for the big time.  I think he wants to emerge fro his brother’s shadow and he has done that.  I think brotherly rivalry and not being known as Peyton’s Manning brother is driving Eli to win this Superbowl.  The running game with both Jacobs and Bradshaw is amazing.  I like the Giants running Burress, Toomer, and Shockey.   Burress is guarantee a victory and I hate when players do that.  That usually motivates the other team but Burress is a big time receiver that can light it up on the field, so watch out.    I am not too familiar with their defense but Strahan and Umenyiora are impact players on the defense.  If the Giants win and Burress has a big game then the MVP has to goto him.

Don’t expect a blowout in this Superbowl.  I think the current spread is 12 pts but I don’t think New England will cover that.  If we examine the past Superbowl victories by the New England Patriots the margin of victory is only 3 pts for each game.(Suberbowl 36 – Patriots 20, Rams 17;  Suberbowl 38 – Patriots 32, Panthers 29,  Suberbowl 39 – Patriots 24, Eagles 21.)  The Giants have been playing rather well in the post season and all the pressure is on the Patriots to win.

Prediction:  In the second half the Patriots will be down by 3 pts.  Tom Brady drives the Patriots down the field.  The touchdown that puts them up for good will be a pass to Randy Moss.  Final Score: Patriots 35 Giants 24.

Superbowl is set

Well I guess I was wrong.  I was sure Green Bay was going to beat the New York Giants.  At least New England beat San Diego.  I could honestly careless for either team.  I am not a Giants fan but I always like going for the underdog.  The Giants will be a huge underdog.  Everyone wants New England to win the Superbowl so they will have their perfect season.  To be honest, I want them to win the Superbowl just for that but I would mind seeing the Giants pull off an unthinkable upset.  Well I wait until the Friday before the Superbowl to see my pick.  Right now, I am leaning towards New England.

NFL Divisional Championship Predictions

The big games are here.  I am a little surprise with both San Diego and New York Giants.  I expected both Green Bay and New England.  Watch out on Sunday!  I believe both games will be a blowout.

Green Bay is going to easily beat New York Giants.  Brett Farve will pick apart the New York Giant defense.  There are too many holes in the defense.  Final Score : Green Bay 35  New York Giants 17.

I believe New England might have a little problem with San Diego.  I am worried about the windy weather forecast for Sunday’s game.  I believe the defense will force San Diego into some turnovers.  I believe the running game of San Diego will give New England some trouble.  Watch out for MVP Tom Brady to go nuts in the second half of the game.  New England’s defense will step it up and hold San Diego.  Final Score New England 31  San Diego 10.

Let me here what you think.
