NBA Free Agency 2010 – July 5

Fourth of  July weekend is over and let’s review what big fireworks went off in the NBA.  We have two huge contracts offered to two NBA players.  I was hoping it would be LeBron and Wade but my dreams were shattered.  What’s taking LeBron so long?  It time for him to man up and make a decision.  Lebron just remember one thing: NBA Championship, forget what your homies are telling you.

First major contract to look at is Joe Johnson resigning with the Atlanta Hawks for $120 million for 6 years.  I understand the Hawks resigning Joe Johnson but $120 million.  Let get real, he’s not worth it.  I think the Hawks could have offered less and still kept him.  Do I blame Joe Johnson, no way.  They offered him the max and he was very smart to take it.

The second big contract I want to talk about is Amare Stoudemire signing with the New York Knicks for $100 million over five years.  You have to be kidding me.  This is a huge risk by the Knicks.  Amare is good but I don’t think he is worth $100 million.  I know the Knicks are rebuilding and doing whatever it can to make a move into the playoffs but I think they overpaid for Amare.  I have no doubt signing Amare is step one  to relaunching the franchise but the Knicks need to land superstar Lebron James or it’s all for nothing. I can’t see Wade coming to the Knicks but if he does look out.  Again do I blame Amare for signing with the Knicks for $100 million, no way.

Both Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire made a wise decision.  Owners showed them the money and they took it.  Before Lebron make his world shaking decision to change the landscape of the NBA, free agents  such as Joe and Amare were wise to get their share of the pie before it was too late.

Two other players to exit free agency and return to their teams were Paul Pierce with Boston and Dirk Nowitzki with Dallas.  These two players just entered free agency to secure their futures.  I have to say smart move.  Both players signed on for another 4 years with their teams.

One last comment is the LA Lakers signing Steve Blake.  Steve Blake played point guard for both the Blazers and Clippers.  I think this is a great move for the Lakers.  I always believe their weakest position was point guard.  I like Derek Fisher but he is getting old.  Eventually this position has to be addressed and no better time than now to address it.

Paul Pierce – “I don’t think Kobe is the best player. I’m the best player.”

“Finals MVP  Paul Pierce who recently spent three days at a ball camp in Madrid, is making, ahem, news about what he said to a Spanish reporter. The money translation, via  RedsArmy: “Q: Is Kobe really the best player in the world? Pierce: I don’t think Kobe is the best player. I’m the best player. There’s a line that separates having confidence and being conceited. I don’t cross that line but I have a lot of confidence in myself.”

I think one of the reasons Paul Pierce has a right to make this statement is due to the fact that his team under his leadership earned an NBA Championship against Kobe Bryant’s Lakers.

The Boston Celtics not only earned an NBA Championship against the Los Angeles Lakers but they clobbered them in the NBA Finals.  Paul Pierce showed his leadership during this series and with his championship, I think he is the best player in the NBA.

I do not think that any of the players that are in the league currently are at the caliber of Dr. J,  Magic, Bird, or MJ.  I think the closest player to their caliber in regards to the impact on the game is Shaq.

Kobe Bryant is a great one on one player but basketball is a team sport.  Kobe does not know how to make his teammates better and thus, he will never lead a team to an NBA Championship under his leadership.  The only reason Kobe has three championships is because of Shaq.    Kobe reminds me of Scottie Pippen.  Scottie never won a championship without MJ.  HMMMMMMMMMMM.

Boston Celtics Champions- Celtics Demolish the Lakers in Game 6

NOOOOO, Lakers lose another NBA Final to the Boston Celtics.  Championship #17.

YESSSSSS, Kobe hasn’t won a NBA Championship without Shaq.  Thank You Boston :>!!!!!!!

The big three came up big!  Kevin Garnett had a monster night with 26 points, 14 rebounds,  and 4 assists.  Ray Allne also had 26 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.  NBA Finals MVP Paul Pierce had 17 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds.  The scoring did not stop with the big three, this was a night when everyone contributed.  Rondo had 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, and 8 assists, while Posey had 11 points and House had 9 points.    Overall the Celtics crushed the Lakers by 39 points.

The Lakers did make it to Boston to play but they gave up early.  Kobe had 22 points but he could not make an impact.  Odom had 14 points and Gasol had 11 points.  The only other Lakers in double figures was Jordan Farmar with 12 points.  Forget comparing Kobe to Jordan, MJ would never allow himself to be humiliated like this in the NBA Finals.  Kobe still has not learned how to make the players around him better.  I doubt Kobe will never win another NBA Championship.  If you were  asleep at the end of the third quarter, you missed ballhogging Kobe Bryant turning over the ball three times in a row.

Paul Pierce is the man and deserves to be Finals MVP.  He is the spark plug for this team and I am glad he has won a NBA Championship.  His comeback in game one after what looked like a serious injury, set the tone for the rest of the Finals.  I am also happy to see both Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett winning their first championship.  Ray Allen was always a favorite player of mine was he was in Seattle and I am glad that he made his way to Boston for this championship.  I know Kevin Garnett has been a dominate player all these years and now he has the opportunity to experience an NBA Championship after all those years of hard work.  Boston has built an awesome team and remember they dominated during the regular season against the West and they proved it was no fluke by demolishing the Lakers during the NBA Finals.

I can’t believe that Doc Rivers outcoached Phil Jackson.  I give the credit to Doc in coaching  but many of the players in Boston learned to put aside their egos for one common goal: the 2008 NBA Championship.

Congrats to the Celtics for an awesome championship.  This was the second largest margin of victory in a NBA Finals game and the largest margin of victory in a clicher game (131 – 92).  The Celtics definitely leave no doubt they are the best team in the NBA for 2008.

Lakers vs Celtics – Game 5 and still alive

Wow, what a game.  The only thing that was wrong, was the Lakers won instead of the Celtics.  The Lakers played just well enough to win this game.    Kobe ended up with  25 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals.  Pau Gasol ended up with 19 points and Lamar had 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Derek Fisher had 15 points and Jordan Farmar had 11 points.  I was not too impressed with this win.  I like the fact that five different players were in double figures but it just felt that the Lakers got lucky to get this win.  The Lakers need to step it up on defense and get excited, show some enthusiasm.  This victory may give them some momentum for the next game but they need to play better defense.

Boston played well but just could not pull of the win.  Paul Pierce had a phenomenal night with 38 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists.  Kevin Garnett had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Ray Allen had 16 points.  Outside of the big three  the only player to come close to double figures was Sam Cassel with 9 points.  The Celtics were just a bit off and I know when they get back home each player will find their sweet spots on the floor.  The tables will turn for Boston in game six.

To be honest, the Lakers don’t look like champions.  They built a 17 point lead in the first quarter and allowed Boston to come back to within 3 points by half time.  Both teams looked tired in the second half and with two minutes to go in the fourth, the Lakers were able to pull away.  I am getting sick of seeing the Lakers players complain every time the referee calls a foul against them.  I think Kobe and Gasol are the worst complainers.

My fear for the Celtics is injuries.  Perkins did not play tonight but hopefully he will be back for game six on Tuesday.  Pierce and Rondo have had their share of injuries this series but they seem alright.   The Celtics need to finish the Lakers off on Tuesday.  If they don’t, then game seven is anyones game.  Forget history, it will come down to plays harder.

If the Celtics play  the say way on Tuesday as they did tonight,  then I think they will win the series on Tuesday night. Being on their home court, they will get a few more calls to go their way and they will like having the fans cheering them on.   What better place to win the championship but at home.  If the Celtics win,  Paul Pierce should be the MVP of the series.

Lakers vs Celtics – Game 3

The Lakers are back at home and Kobe was back in the zone.  It’s definitely good to be at home.  Kobe Bryant has 36 points.  The other big man for the Lakers was Sasha Vujacic, he poured in 20 points.  Thank you Sasha for helping out tonight.  I was a little disappointed in both Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom with only 9 points each.  It is amazing to see the LA Lakers get to the line finally.  Hmmm,  I wonder if there is any truth to ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy’s allegations.

Two of the Celtics big three came up short tonight.  Ray Allen was the only one  who was in a zone tonight with 25 points.  Ray Allen was hot from three point land with 5 of 7 for threes.  I was disappointed in both Garnett and Pierce.  Kevin Garnett had 13 points, while Paul Pierce had 6 points.  We will see how serious Rondo’s injury is tomorrow.

I honestly believe, we are looking at a seven game series.  Both teams are great home teams that don’t like losing on their home court.  The Lakers need to keep the defense up on the Celtics for the next game.  One note to the Celtics, what was the point of having Ray Allen guard Kobe Bryant one on one at the end of the game?  Fourth quarter and if Kobe has the ball with less than 90 seconds left, you should double team him and force him to take a bad shot or pass the ball.  Remember he is the league’s MVP for a reason.  Kobe is the best one on one player in the league.

Game 2 – Lakers vs. Celtics

Game One is over and done with.  Celtics played a better game than the Lakers.  Paul Pierce coming back into the game after his injury was inspirational.  If the injury was real or fake does not matter, his returned fueled his team to overtake the Lakers.  Kobe Bryant shooting was horrible but he will bounce back soon.  By game 2 or game 3 at home, he will be in a zone.

Do I expect the Celtics to lose game 2?  No, the Celtics are a good home team.  I would lkike to blame it on the curse of the Boston Garden but that was the old arena.  The Celtics big three are key.  If Paul Pierce’s injury is for real, then we will see it’s effect in game 2.  The true question is, will the Celtics defense be able to keep Kobe in a shooting slump.  Kevin Garnett inside is causing havoc for the Lakers.  If the Lakers can’t go inside then it allows the Boston defense to force the game outside.  Ray Allen could be an X-factor if he continues to score.

The Lakers have to realize the pressure is on the Celtics.  The Celtics are expected to win at home.  If the Lakers can steal game 2 then the Lakers have a golden opportunity.  Kobe Bryant needs help from his team mates this game.  This means if Kobe is in a shooting slump, then he needs to pass the ball.  Personal note to Kobe Bryant, quit trying to get out of your shooting slump, pass the ball to your team mates, and this will force the Boston defense to focus on one of your other team mates.  If you follow this plan, you will opportunity to take better shots.  Kobe for game tape on this concept, watch the movie Celtic Pride.  To the rest of the Lakers,  it is time to step up.  Lamar or Pau, this is the time for you to outshine Kobe for a couple quarters.  Someone else needs to be the offensive machine.  Doc Rivers will make a halftime adjustment and then Kobe it is your time to offensively explode.

I expect the Lakers to have a small lead going into the fourth quarter.  The Lakers will blow their lead and Boston will win by four points.  Boston will go up by 2 games and then the scene shifts to Los Angeles.

NBA Finals Are Set

The LA Lakers and the Boston Celtics will battle it out for the NBA Championship.  It is a flashback to the 80’s.  Two dominate teams will meet and may the best team win.  It all starts next Thursday.

I want the LA Lakers to win but I hate Kobe Bryant.  I hate Phil Jackson due to his Chicago Bulls beating the LA Lakersduring the 90’s.  Phil has redeemed himself with coaching the LA Lakers  to three NBA Championships from 1999-2001.  I would like to see Phil earn his 10th championship ring as a coach against the Boston Celtics breaking Red Auerbach’s record at 9 championship rings as a coach.

The Boston Celetics big three of Pierce, Garnett,  and Allen will face off against the LA Lakers big three of Bryant, Odom, and Gasol.  I think the Boston Celtics starting five will match up to the LA lakers starting five.  When the Lakers are on, I don’t think any team can stop them.  Kobe is deserving as the league’s MVP and he can score at will.  If Boston decides to double team Kobe, then Gasol or Odom will be ready to step up.

After watching Boston struggle through the playoffs, I think there is an issue with their team.  I don’t believe it is an issue of talent but coaching.  The Boston Celtics have lost one game last series at home but did go into Detroit to win two games.  Garnett, Allen, and Pierce all have the hunger to claim their first NBA Championship.  Boston will definitely have an opportunity to win this series.

Kobe Bryant has a desire to win a NBA Championship without Shaq.  No one can deny that Kobe is an NBA superstar, but he will need to rely on his teammates to pull out a victory against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.  The success of the Lakers ever since the Gasol trade was their passing.  Kobe can take over a game or two this series but to win the series his teammates will need to step up.

This series will come down to the bench players and I believe the Lakers have a better bench.  Kobe will need to get his teammates involved but if they don’t, Kobe has the ability to carry the team.  I believe we will see why Kobe is the MVP and we will see the Lakers winning this series in 6 games. I would love to watch LA win the series in LA but winning it in Boston would be a crushing blow.  Again LA is 6 games.
